Ignite Phoenix Will Happen

June 17th, 2008

I had www.ignitephoenix.com up for maybe almost a year now since April of 2007, with nothing more than a plea for someone to step up and basically make it happen. Well, Jeff Moriarty and Roger Williams have taken steps to make Ignite Phoenix a reality.

It looks like it will be happening in August, at the offices of Jobbing.com (they host the monthly Phoenix Social Media Club meeting).

The best place to get info on all the details is www.ignite-phoenix.org

Subscribe to the RSS feed, and follow announcements on Twitter via @ignitephoenix.

What’s needed now are talk proposals. The idea is to have two sets of short talks; short, as in under 10 minutes; short, as in pecha kucha short, as in no time to be bored or boring.

Suitable topics can be almost anything. No sales pitches. But see here for details.

In between the talk sets there will be a break for discussion and socializing.

Spread the word, and thinking about what you would talk about if you had five minutes and an audience.

Woot! Thanks for the effort, James.

This maybe a good thing to get posted on Phoenix Tech Groups Google calendar

Although I am happy with any organization interested in helping the Greater Phoenix area to become more of what it can be, I am confussed by the use of Ignite Phoenix as a name.

Ignite Phoenix established itself last fall as a place for those interested in conversation and dialog about the future of Phoenix to meet. Since its inception, Ignite Phoneix has met montly, established a web presence, created a LinkedIn group and moved forward in earnest. Numerous blog sites talk about the group and its members are working on civic outreach projects under the name Ignite Pheonix.

It has become a known entity among community activists, polictical types, movers & shakers, business professionals and more.

The “new” Ignite Phoenix group has admittedly done nothing until now. Why, when it was in its infancy stages, did the group not establish itself under a new moniker.

I am confussed, as will dozens, if not hundreds, of others. It’s not too late to do the right thing and choose an unused title for the organization.

“Ignite [city name] ” has been around for well over a year I believe. Multiple cities have joined in with the now international Ignite format. There are many who want to see that in Phoenix, and thus the name.

It is simply following a naming format that was already established. I registered the domain name back in April 2007, and that was when I first started the process to see what could happen.

www.ignitephoenix.com made it clear what the intent was.

This may be a matter of bad timing, though the use and meaning of the name Ignite Phoenix as relates to an evening of lightning talks is neither sudden nor unreasonable.

Perhaps there is some way the two groups could each add qualifiers to their names to help make clear the distinction.

If you had established your group nearly a year ago, held meetings, been in the press, sought and gained alliances with the City of Phoenix, ASU and dozens of Phoenix businesses and gained a brand name what would you do if another organization came forward and wanted to use your name?

I’d doubt you would sit idly. Wouldn’t you expect them to respect what you had already achieved? Wouldn’t you expect them to take the high road and rename their organization before it too gained notoriety?

This is a simple Golden Rule business choice.

Two things: The name Ignite Phoenix and the Web site ignitephoenix.com was put in place over a year ago, and it was based on a series of prior events. Basically, Ignite <city> was an established concept before the site went up. During the time I wrote publicly about it, both on my Web site and on various mailing lists. I never heard a word abut any other local Ignite group. So, while I’m sympathetic, its not as if the use of the name was secret, or only recently chosen despite some known conflicting use.

More, important, those facts don’t necessarily improve anything for anyone, and neither does trying to debate this in blog comments. To the best of my knowledge, Gene, you have not tried to contact Jeff, Roger, or myself directly, and I believe that earlier attempts were made to contact the people involved with the other Ignite met with with no response.

I assume everyone has been acting in good faith here, but this is not the place to sort this out.
